A Complete Guide to Medical Terminology
Medical terminology is used to describe the body and its associated conditions, components, and processes. The terms are used primarily by doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. Morphology is the term used to describe the decoding and breakdown of medical terms into their three basic parts: prefix, root, and suffix. Many medical terms contain words originally found in the Latin or Greek languages. Knowing the individual meanings of certain suffixes can help in understanding the term in its entirety. For instance, when looking at a term that includes the suffix “itis,” this indicates that the condition causes inflammation. If the medical term is talking about a disease or condition that affects multiple parts of the body, the two body parts are combined using the letter “o.” An example of this is gastroenteritis, which involves both the stomach and the small intestine, with “itis” indicating that the condition causes inflammation of both body parts.
