Celebrating Women
It’s International Women’s Day! We understand that empowering women is key for building an equitable and inclusive future and we wanted to do our part to #BreakTheBias. So, we asked some of our S&B community to share what this day means to them and give some advice to other women working in healthcare.

What has been your motivation throughout your career?
My motivation has been my family. Of course, it helps that I’m in am amazing profession! But my family has always been motivation to keep moving forward and grow both myself and career.
What tips do you have for other women in the your field?
Do not give up! Be persistent. Go for what you want to achieve and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Before I became a nurse, I distinctly remember someone close to me telling me I couldn’t make it. Guess who worked hard and proved them wrong? Me.
When I moved to California, it was VERY difficult to find a job in a reputable hospital as a new nurse. I called one of the managers for a position I wanted and he pretty much tore me apart. I was broken. Everyone told me to settle for a job that I didn’t want. But I kept going and applied for even more jobs, doing everything I could. I ended up getting a highly sought after position at one of the biggest hospitals in San Diego.
My long term goal was to work in the aesthetic field. Everyone told me it would never happen, that it’s an impossible field to get into especially in a place like California. Well, now I am an aesthetic nurse and working alongside a doctor as the director of our clinic. Moral of the story, push yourself and do not let anyone bring you down!
Any reflection on International Women's Day and what it means to you?
International Women’s Day is the celebration of the strength and courage of women around the world! To me it is a day to continue to celebrate and honor the contributions that women have made. To inspire young girls, to show them that they can do anything - work in any field they want, be a leader!
Jennifer is a great example of resilience! It's easy to lose hope when there are people close to you trying to bring you down, but hard work and determination goes a long way. It's great to see women working to inspire the next generation of girls to succeed in highly competitive fields .

What has been your motivation throughout your career?
I want to make an impact on a person and their family. I don’t want to just go through the motions. People will always remember how they were treated, especially while in their most vulnerable state. I understand that I will not always have the right answer, but I can show empathy and treat all patients with respect.

Any reflection on International Women's Day and what it means to you?
I think we need more than one day to appropriately celebrate women’s achievements. As a female working in orthopedic surgery, the gender bias is real. I am thankful we have a day to truly recognize the importance of reaching a gender-neutral world and to #breakthebias.
The "feminine touch" is so important in the the health care industry. Empathy and care are necessities when working with patients. And as Christina noted, gender bias is real, thus having a day honoring women makes all of the difference.

What has been your motivation throughout your career?
What had been my biggest motivation through my career is my daughter. Knowing that she will one day realize how strong of a mother and woman I am, brings me so much joy. I go hard every day at work to make her proud and keep that perfect smile on her face!
What tips do you have for other women in your field?
My biggest tip that I have for woman in nursing is to never underestimate your knowledge. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. Study hard, work hard, and always remember you are smart and you ARE an amazing nurse!
